GiSTEQ PhotoTrackr Mini DPL900 – GPS tracking device – 2 MB

Unlike practically every other GPS tagger on the market, this product does not function as a USB drive. Instead, in order to make the product work, you need to install a serial-to-USB driver, pick a COM port if the software doesn’t detect it automatically (what is this? 1995?), and access your log files via Gisteq’s software. It’s been a royal hassle to set up on Windows 7, and their support staff has not returned my e-mails or phone calls. I have a dual-boot machine, so I gave up on Win7 and installed it on my XP OS. You go through the same hassles, but at least it works.

The serial-to-USB setup also makes it difficult to backup log files, since you need to have a computer with you that has all of the proper software and drivers installed. Rather than just use any computer with a USB port, you have to bring along and use *your* computer if you’re traveling. This is just a really frustrating device. It gets one star because it’s got a nice form factor, and because I had to give it one.

This product not only completely confused me (I’m a real tekky) but failed when finally sussed to live up to it’s claims.

Purchased and received the GisTEQ Phototrackr Mini DPL900. Plugged it in to charge it up for use. No lights ever came on. I plugged it into the computer after downloading and installing the software and the device was even noticed. I have sent email asking for an RMA number to exchange the product for a new one and no response was received. I called the support number. I was asked to spend an additional $2.00 to send back the device and when GisTEQ received it, then they would send a new one to me. I asked “Why should I pay $2.00 to send back a product that should have worked in the first place?” Mind you, $2.00 is not much. However, I believe if a company wants to keep customers, then by principle, customer service should be a priority. GisTEQ then stated they would send me a return label via email. I have yet to receive anything.

I gave it one star to be able to publish this review, however, since the product never worked it doesn’t deserve any stars.
